Pancho arrived at Los Barrios pound in July 2024 and was about 4 years old on arrival. Pancho – Big-hearted, gentle, and affectionate...This handsome, large boy takes everything in stride, though he can be a little cautious with new people at first. Once he warms up, he’ll happily come over for a pat. Pancho has also been seen around a young child, and he was calm, gentle, and very well behaved — showing a patient and kind nature with little ones.His previous owner surrendered him due to Pancho’s knack for escaping from an unsecured property, but with a safe, enclosed space to call his own, Pancho will make a devoted and loving companion.Pancho enjoys getting out for walks, sniffing and exploring every detail of his surroundings. Unfortunately, these outings happen far too rarely due to the lack of volunteers.Update – March 2025Due to the risk of flooding at the pound, Pancho was temporarily moved to a safe location along with his penmate Sandra, where they stayed in a horsebox within a stable. He settled in quickly and adapted well to his new routine.Here’s what his carer shared during that time:“Pancho listens and respects my ‘no.’ He gently comes over for cuddles, likes to trot around the fenced area to check everything is in order, have a sniff, play with Sandra, and then quietly return to his stable.He’s intelligent, calmly assesses situations, stays alert but never reacts aggressively. He’s curious and composed, exploring his surroundings with ease. His tail is always wagging, and at first, he smiles shyly… but once he gets to know you, he beams.He likes to ‘check in’ with me, have a cuddle, and enjoys both gentle ear rubs and some good scratches too.Walking them on the lead together is fine, but it’s a joy to let them play freely in the secure space — they are so happy and carefree.”Pancho thrived in this temporary setup, showing his calm, affectionate, and intelligent nature. After a few weeks, he and Sandra had to return to their small cage at the pound. Six months later, Sandra was adopted, leaving Pancho behind.More recently, Pancho was introduced to another large female, the beautiful Pura. The two shared a cage peacefully and clearly enjoyed each other’s company. Pura has now gone into foster care, a positive step toward her future home, leaving Pancho alone once again.After spending such a long time at the pound, Pancho now spends more than 23 hours a day by himself. He has become quieter and spends much of his time sleeping — a difficult reality for a dog who clearly values companionship.Despite the challenges of life at the pound, Pancho remains a gentle, intelligent, and loving dog. He thrives on calm interaction, enjoys cuddles, and is affectionate and well-mannered in a secure, familiar setting. He would flourish in a safe, loving home where he can finally relax, explore, and enjoy the companionship he clearly craves.If you have room in your heart and home for a big, affectionate dog, Pancho is ready to be your loyal friend.
