Joker arrived at Los Barrios pound in November 2023 and was about 7 years old on arrival. He is a Pitbull Terrier. Joker – Still learning to trust… Joker arrived at the pound in 2023, utterly terrified and shut down. He was so afraid that he wouldn’t let anyone come near him, and for many long months, he remained in that state—keeping his distance, watching the world from afar, and struggling to feel safe.Now, after more than a year and a half, Joker is slowly beginning to take small steps forward. With the few people he knows well, he will allow a brief touch—a gentle moment of connection—but with strangers, he still keeps his distance. He has started coming forward for treats, and he seems to be making quiet progress, but it is clear that Joker still carries deep fear and uncertainty.Unfortunately, life at the pound cannot offer what Joker truly needs to continue healing. We simply do not have the resources to provide him with professional training or the consistent, experienced support he requires. Our staff and volunteers do their very best, but Joker needs more than we can give within the limitations of a busy shelter environment.Joker needs an experienced and patient adopter—ideally someone familiar with timid or fearful dogs—who can give him the calm, stable, and understanding home he has never known. He needs a home without children and without other animals, where he can decompress at his own pace and begin to discover that the world doesn’t have to be a frightening place.Joker is not a quick-fix dog. But for someone with the heart, time, and knowledge to help him, he could one day blossom into a loyal companion. He deserves that chance.
