Marcelo arrived at Los Barrios pound in August 2023 and was about 1 year old on arrival. He is a gorgeous Mastin Cross that was found presumably abandoned in the streets and brought to the pound.Marcelo was on the verge of death when a volunteer found him laying on the road. When he was about to give up life only one year old… he thought it was time to leave, to leave the cruel world he had known. At least he would do so in the arms of someone who would give him the love he had never known before. What Marcelo didn't know was that the second we rescued him we were alerting Urvet that he was on his way there urgently. What he didn't know was that his lucky break came when our volunteer took him in her arms.Marcelo was extremely malnourished and had very severe life-threatening anemia. He was hospitalized and received two blood transfusions to get him back on his feet. He survived!!!!Marcelo is doing well at the pound; he is gaining weight and gets stronger every day. He is surrounded with people who cares about him and lots of new doggie friends. He goes out on walks and is great on the lead. He can be a bit wary of people he doesn’t know, but he is getting more and more confident, and playful with his furry friends. Marcelo deserves to find a loving home, where he will feel the love he has never known, have a nice comfortable bed and just enjoy life.In March 2025, Marcelo was moved into foster care due to the risk of flooding at the pound. His foster family has kindly shared an update about how he’s doing:"Hello, I’m Marcelo’s foster. He’s a very large Mastín—tall, lean, and in good shape. Marcelo is a young dog, about two or three years old, and he is very fearful. He’s slowly getting used to everyday noises and is improving little by little. I’m confident he’ll continue to adapt over time.He prefers short walks because he feels safest at home, so ideally, his future home should have a garden. He is fully house-trained and does his business in the garden. It would also be best if there is a female dog in the home—he relies on her for emotional support and feels protected by her presence.Marcelo has no issues with cats, whether inside the house or out on the street. He doesn’t seek conflict with other dogs—on the contrary, he tends to keep his distance. At home, he can become territorial with strangers, as is typical for the breed. He may bark to protect his 'flock,' but he never bites. He eats once a day at midday—dry food and some minced meat. Once you win his heart, he’s extremely affectionate—and be warned, he might just steal yours too. He sleeps quietly all night on a mat beside my bed and doesn’t make a sound from the moment I go to sleep until I get up.Marcelo is submissive and obedient, and he’s improving every day. He just needs patience and someone who isn’t afraid of him—he’s not aggressive at all, in fact, he acts like he thinks he’s a Chihuahua! In short, I recommend Marcelo to someone who has a stable routine, a garden, and a female dog—size doesn’t matter. He needs a calm environment, patience, and lots of love."Marcelo’s gentle nature and big heart shine through, and with the right person, he will continue to grow in confidence and trust.
